Advice needed by DragonsFlameMagic Advice needed by DragonsFlameMagic
Ok, so Im drawing this for a friend in my RL
I have been so uninspired lately. Everything I draw looks horrible! I have been working on a gift for :iconhell-sakura: but it looks like shit. DX
I opened my emails last night, and my RL friend had sent me a long letter with a story in it. Her story is amazing and I decided that maybe it could crack my serious art block!
So this came out DX
I need help!
She is supposed to be in the rain sitting on a bench outside of her school after a bad homecoming dance. Its night time. And there should be a dull street lamp near her cascading a yellow spot light.
I realized I can never accomplish this. LOL! so I will just post it and hope for some advice.

SHADE SHADE SHAADEE!!!

oki make a new layer, call it Shade/light or do the light in a different layer.
then select the colors with ''Want'' to or press ''W'' on keyboard.

go to the shade layer, select it.
go to brush left top icon and select 100% brush 50% flow and make the opacity on like 20%
and draw with a deep dark red or black color on the Shade layer to make shadows

My advice, don't doubt your self so much. that looks amazing, really. maybe, you should just try to add in the other things that you wanted to. just see how it turns out

(Wow you are so famous Flames! Look at all those comments! :XD:)
Because of the above, I'm sure this has already been said... but, I think the problem is that it looks like the girl is leaning on the bench, rather than sitting on it. A quick fix for that might to move her back a bit, if possible, but I think a reason why its giving off that illusion is because the bench is bigger than it should be, compared to her. So if you can, I'd make it a bit smaller so they look more proportional.

Other than that, its gorgeous. "So far, so good" as they say. Did you really draw this without any references? You are so talented.

Grr. I wrote a bunch, and accidentally closed the page. So; this may seem rushed or whatever- but do forgive me. CX

Anyways, I've collected a bunch of hopefully useful resources for you. :3 I really hope they help.

I'll point out stuff about each piece; so this will end up rather long...

Here's an elementary school at night, and it happened to be rainy too: [link]

Another school at "night"- this one really helps with how asphalt reflects light when it's wet: [link]

Here's just a good Street Lamp to draw: [link]

The glow of a street lamp- with a handy dandy man: [link]

Street light glow on a bench: [link]

Street light effect to bench- grass- and sidewalk: [link]

Since fog is often a small part of rain- here's a street light and bench in a lot of fog: [link]

Someone's digital drawing of street lamps at night with humans- so hopefully helpful: [link]

How to make Rain: [link]

Here's how to make rain work on any surface- including the "bounce off" effect of water droplets: [link]

Here's a good example of how rain effects hair (or in this case- fur) : [link]

Human in directional lighting and heavy rain example: [link]

"Elf" (humanoid) in heavy rain: [link]

This one is actually how lighting in a room works- but it looks to be very helpful: [link]

Establishing Mood with Color (VERY useful) : [link]

And lastly- mood lighting: [link]

I hope those are all reallllyyy helpful!!! <33

This is really brilliant! :la: To get the mood right when you do the BG, trying doing some color overlays to get the whole thing tied together. :meow: And get the whole thing nice and dark, so the street lamp pops out those highlights (even if its meant to be dull). :la:

This is gorgeous. O.O You draw humans amazingly well... *dreamy sigh*

I think I see why you think it looks like shit though... don't worry, it's good shit (and I mean that in the best possible way, lol ;)) I fear it's quite late in the piece to change, but at least you'll have it for future reference. IMHO, the subject and the bench look quite a bit... disunited. Like they're two separate images thrown together. The main reason for that (I believe) is that bench feels too big in relation to her, and she does not look like she is properly sitting on it... she looks like she's on the very edge of it, and her supporting hand doesn't appear to actually be touching the bench.
Also... her left leg looks a little out of place... a little long in relation to the other, perhaps?

Just my 2-cents... hope that helps. :) and don't worry, despite those remarks the piece still looks fabulous. :giggle:

I wanted to make her chest smaller. But I made this for my friend, its her character, so she told me she was 'well endowed' so to speak. So what can I do DX. Oh well, Im probably not going to finish it. She didnt seem to crazy about it anyway.

Here is where you are wrong Flames. Your art has been the best. You haven't dropped in the quality of how you draw or paint. Don't bring your self down over this. You are one of the best artists on DA and I wish you could get featured. Deviant Art doesn't know they are missing out on someone with true artistic talent. And picture above that you are making for :iconhellsakura: is fine. You just need to color it up some more. That's all.

*Hugs back* You are welcome!!! You really need the support and don't let one picture make you doubt how good of an artist you are. My sister does it all the time but I always look at her art and see the talent she has. It's the same way with you. You may doubt yourself but others see your art as a masterpiece.

Okay! *rubs hands together* This is a fantastic start, but there are things to consider:

The rain. Is it a drizzle? Full-on? Unless you have magical hair, it's going to flatten, flipped-out ends are going to droop. It will add more weight to the clothes. Rain tends to add a dull gleam to things, or amplify color. Since she will be in a dim light, which will be more yellow (if I read right), it will make colors a little more off-set than what they should be. Add that slight gleam of rain, and you get one awesome picture.

Keep in mind the direction the rain is coming from, as well. Directly down? Left-ish, right-ish? Say it's coming right at her from the left, you'd see more 'wetness' on the upper folds of her dress. I suppose it depends on how long the rain has been coming down?

I can keep rambling if you want! Tell me more and I'll see what I can do to help. But it's so amazing so far. X3!

If you're unsure what I'd do is finish the flats on the bench, then worry about the background and placing the light source. I'd put the light behing the bench to her left, but that's just me. I hope that helps a bit :)

Well, I know a lot of people do rain as a series of lines on a seperate layer, and then they put a glow with some lines coming off it where things are being rained on...
I think I've explained that pretty badly, here's an example of what I meant: [link]
